US President Donald Trump finally admitted that the “rise of China is not good for the U.S” and therefore revealing in turn that the heart of his policies is not just about trade disputes, but a clear attempt to contain China’s rise and development. As relations between Washington and Beijing continue to deteriorate, as has the assault on Chinese technology by the Presidency accordingly.

In the beginning of May 2019, before the full onset of the movement, Martin Lee (first chairperson of the Democratic Party), Lee Cheuk-yan (first chairperson of the Labour Party), Nathan Law (Chairperson of Demosistō), and Mak Yin-ting (former chairperson of the Hong Kong Journalist Association), along with other Pan-Dem leaders, visited Washington, D.C. as a delegation to meet Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, among other Washington bigwigs. There, they called on the United States to oppose the proposed amendment of the Extradition Bill put forth by the Hong Kong government, threatened the review of the Hong Kong Policy Act of 1992, which grants Hong Kong separate treatment from Mainland China, and pushed the Hong Kong Democracy and Human Rights Act.

The former Director of the CIA and current United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, visited Denmark on July 22nd in order to meet with the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jeppe Kofod, as well as representatives from Greenland and the Faroe Islands in order to formulate a common military and economic policy in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions.

Leading up to the visit a statement from the US Department of State highlighted the importance of a partnership in the Arctic, “particularly as we see increased activity in the region from Russia and the People’s Republic of China”.

But there is another bone of contention: The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline being built between Russia and Germany.
