[2005] The Politics of the Srebrenica Massacre

“Srebrenica” has become the symbol of evil, and specifically Serb evil. It is commonly described as “a horror without parallel in the history of Europe since the Second World War” in which there was a cold-blooded execution “of at least 8,000 Muslim men and boys.” [1] The events in question took place in or near the Bosnian town of Srebrenica between July 10 and 19, 1995, as the Bosnian Serb army (BSA) occupied that town and fought with and killed many Bosnian Muslims, unknown numbers dying in the fighting and by executions. There is no question but that there were executions, and that many Bosnian Muslim men died during the evacuation of Srebrenica and its aftermath. But even though only rarely discussed there is a major issue of how many were executed, as numerous bodies found in local grave sites were victims of fighting, and many Bosnian Muslim men who fled Srebrenica reached Bosnian Muslim territory safely. Some bodies were also those of the many Serbs killed in the forays by the Bosnian Muslims out of Srebrenica in the years before July 1995.

  1. The Parenti talk/link is taken from “History as Mystery.” It’s one of his better books, though more dense/tough to read. At least for me. He’s talking about that chapter I mentioned. Douglas Valentine plagiarized Michael Parenti (as well as Eric Thomas Chester, myself and others) recently for his new book, “Pisces Moon.”

  2. Thanks for sharing! A good introduction (assuming one isn’t familiar with Yugoslavia’s destruction by NATO) to the crimes against Yugoslavia is “To Kill a Nation” by Michael Parenti. The edited work by Herman is far more in depth and detailed but the Parenti book is a relatively quick read and less dense. There is a large overlap with the ruin of Yugoslavia and what is playing out in Ukraine, Frank Lindsay being a major character nobody talks about. He was OSS/CIA (see his “Beacons in the Night” memoir, Alex Constantine’s “Jackals” the declassified interview he did with CIA, interview by former Marine Corps Commandant Berger, etc.) in Yugoslavia as well as Ukraine and facilitated privatization and the movement of war criminals in/out of country. You can find stuff with him (while at McKinsey) in the CIA FOIA reading room as well.

      • His humor comes out still in his writings, which go much deeper than the talks/lectures.

If you read Marx/Engels/Lenin (as well as several others…Castro, Xi Jinping, Mao, Maduro, Stalin) they have a great sense of humor. “Herr Vogt” by Marx is illustrative of this and Lenin in his “Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism” lampoons Kautsky and others.
