Chinese foreign ministers have traditionally marked the new year by visiting the African continent. Wang Yi’s 2022 African tour begins with Eritrea against the backdrop of the US strategy in the Horn of Africa to gain control of the strategically vital Red Sea that connects Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal.

I have long predicted that the day the USA loses control of the strategically critical Red Sea/Baab Al Mandeb marks the beginning of the end of Pax Americana’s dominance of the world. With this blunder against Ethiopia, the USA has shot itself in the foot, leaving itself increasingly weakened and no longer viewed by the people of Africa as an omnipotent force that can do what it pleases.
The north-east African country Eritrea has signed an MoU with China to join the Belt And Road Initiative. The MOU was signed on November 25, 2021 by the Chinese Ambassador Cai Ge and Eritrea’s Foreign Minister Osman Saleh. Eritrea is strategically important as it has access to the Red Sea, the Suez Canal and to Europe, as well as to waters in the Arabian Gulf and on towards the Indian Ocean.
