The Web of State-Backed Extremism: From COINTELPRO to MKY

In July 2024, U.S. authorities indicted Michail Chkhikvishvili, the alleged new leader of Maniac Murder Cult (MKY), on four counts related to soliciting hate crimes and planning mass violence in New York City. Chkhikvishvili, 21, was arrested in Chișinău, Moldova, and extradited to the United States on May 22, 2025. The following day, he made his first appearance in Federal District Court before Magistrate Judge Peggy Kuo. Operating under the alias “Commander Butcher,” he was accused of coordinating with an undercover law enforcement officer to orchestrate a large-scale attack. Following his arrest, the militant accelerationist group Injekt Division claimed he had previously lived in Tbilisi, Georgia, and had ties to the Georgian military.

Alleged ‘Maniac Murder Cult’ Leader Indicted Over Plot to Kill Jews

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn on Tuesday unsealed a sweeping felony indictment against the 20-year-old they say is the head of a violent Eastern European skinhead gang implicated in a number of assaults and attacks abroad, some of them fatal. The gang, known as Maniac Murder Cult or MKY, is connected to the com/764 pedophilia network, with at least one killing in Romania directly connected to MKY.

According to the FBI, MKY adheres to a “neo-Nazi accelerationist ideology and promotes violence and violent acts against racial minorities, the Jewish community, and other groups it deems “Undesirables.” Much like other accelerationist militants such as the Atomwaffen Division and The Base, MKY seeks to destabilize society through violence and terrorism. It was founded in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro by Yegor Krasnov and is accused of many homicides and assaults in both Russia and Ukraine. In their Telegram channels, MKY members lionized in-person violence and distributed how-to guides on committing violent assaults and shootings, causing maximum harm to victims, and how perpetrators could cover their tracks. Committing and documenting such an attack is the criteria for admittance to MKY.

FBI Calls End-to-End Encryption ‘Deeply Concerning’ as Privacy Groups Hail Apple’s Advanced Data Protection as a Victory for Users

While privacy groups and apps applaud Apple for the expansion of end-to-end encryption in ‌iCloud‌, governments have reacted differently. In a statement to The Washington Post, the FBI, the largest intelligence agency in the world, said it’s “deeply concerned with the threat end-to-end and user-only-access encryption pose.” Speaking generally about end-to-end encryption like Apple’s Advanced Data Protection feature, the bureau said that it makes it harder for the agency to do its work and that it requests “lawful access by design.”

“This hinders our ability to protect the American people from criminal acts ranging from cyber-attacks and violence against children to drug trafficking, organized crime, and terrorism,” the bureau said in an emailed statement. “In this age of cybersecurity and demands for ‘security by design,’ the FBI and law enforcement partners need ‘lawful access by design.'”

Former FBI official Sasha O’Connell also weighed in, telling The New York Times “it’s great to see companies prioritizing security, but we have to keep in mind that there are trade-offs, and one that is often not considered is the impact it has on decreasing law enforcement access to digital evidence.”

EARN IT Act Will Make The Internet Worse For Everyone By Undermining Privacy And Security

To save the children, we must destroy everything. That’s the reality of the EARN IT Act. I mean, you can get some sort of sense of what you’re in store for just by reading the actual words behind the extremely labored acronym: Eliminating Abuse and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies Act. Whew. It’s a mouthful. And, given the name, it seems like this would be Congress putting funding towards supporting moderation efforts that target abusive content.
