Taiwan Issues Rare Confirmation That U.S. Special Operators Are Training On The Island (Updated)

U.S. Marine Corps special operators from the Marine Raider Regiment recently began conducting drills on the island, Taiwan’s Naval Command confirmed to Taiwan News on November 9, 2020. While U.S. forces have trained in Taiwan, this fact has generally not been publicized by either American or Taiwanese officials since 1979. That year, the U.S. government officially recognized the Communist regime in Beijing as the sole legitimate authority in China and formally severed diplomatic ties with the Nationalist government in Taipei. At the same time, the United States has reserved the right to continue supporting Taiwan and its military until there is a final settlement over its status vis-a-vis the mainland.

This all suggests that a particular focus is being placed on infiltration and interdiction missions, as well as reconnaissance, reflected also in this latest exercise with the Raiders. In particular, in a conflict scenario, Taiwan is expected to deploy special operations teams to various islands in or near the Taiwan Strait from where they would be able to harass Chinese forces, delaying their advance, or perhaps even launching raids on the mainland. These forces could also act as an early warning force of an impending invasion via the collection of critical intelligence during clandestine amphibious operations.

Pompeo’s green light for Xinjiang terrorism is callous opportunism

Whilst the world is distracted by the ongoing drama and controversy of the U.S. presidential election, the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made a very quiet but sinister move. In a published memo, the State Department delisted the “Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement” (ETIM), a jihadist organization emerging in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region that has posed threats to China, as a terrorist group.

US poisons China’s international anti-graft efforts

Observers and international legal scholars reached by the Global Times questioned the purported connection between the eight suspects and Chinese law enforcement authorities, saying that Chinese officers would ask for local judicial assistance and go through formal procedures to conduct activities under Operation Fox Hunt, “so the suspects involved in the case could have nothing to do with Fox Hunt.”

US media outlets do not care about the reality at all, and they are just after a good story, if anything, said Shen Yi, director at the Research Center for Cyberspace Governance of Fudan University.

Shen also floated a theory that the US Justice Department, headed by Attorney General William Barr, who has been dubbed as a tool of US President Donald Trump, is targeting the Fox Hunt operation to help out fugitive Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui in return for a favor from him. The favor was supposedly posting a sex video of Joe Biden’s son on his GTV website to deal a blow to Trump’s rival in the presidential election.

Guo is wanted for graft and is a high-profile name on the Interpol red notice list. He has lived in the US since leaving China, and claims to be a dissident. US media has previously exposed Guo, along with Steve Bannon, as being a driver of anti-China forces, cooking up a rumor that COVID-19 was engineered in a Chinese lab.
