The Strategic Culture Foundation’s online journal was this week hit by a massive cyberattack. The assault resulted in the forum being shut down on its regular internet site. Readers who normally access the journal were informed that the site was no longer available.

On the night of 18 August, the “international domain name registry” blocked southfront.org without any warning or explanation. Despite the fact that this organisation has been formally independent since 1998, it is actually controlled by the US Department of Commerce. What they have done is an unprecedented action in the history of modern information society. This is the American way of democracy, freedom of speech and the rule of law.

Over the last few weeks, a flurry of diplomatic efforts in the West Asia region brought the Taliban to the fore. Last week, the Iranian foreign minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, traveled to neighboring Pakistan at the head of a large delegation. During the visit, many security issues were discussed, with the situation in Afghanistan seeming to be one of them. This is evident from the fact that Hassan Kazemi Qomi, Iran’s presidential envoy for Afghanistan, accompanied the foreign minister during the three-day visit.

After Ukrainian forces regained control of the port city of Kherson last November, following eight months of Russian occupation, some journalists entered the liberated city within hours. Without formal permission to be there, they documented the jubilant crowds welcoming soldiers with hugs and Ukrainian flags. Ukrainian officials, who tightly control press access to the front lines, responded by revoking the journalists’ press credentials, claiming that they had “ignored existing restrictions.”

The heated clashes have remained largely behind the scenes because the credentials are vital to report from the country, and journalists worry that a public conflict might further threaten their access.
