Back in Donetsk anew, I interviewed war correspondent and journalist, Christelle Néant. Christelle arrived in Donetsk in 2016 to report on what had already been two bloody years of Ukraine warring on its former population in the Donetsk and Lugansk Peoples Republics.
At midnight on New Year’s Eve, Ukrainian Nazis launched massive attack on the city of Donetsk. The Armed Forces of Ukraine shelled the center and different residential quarters of the city with multiple rocket launchers. Explosions thundered across the city. Rockets began to fall on the peaceful city immediately after the New Year came.
That may be a retaliation for the destruction in Dnieper city, on January 14, of a residential building that the Russian forces did not target, but anyway, the Ukrainian deliberate terrorist shelling of Donbass is almost daily for more than eight years.
Donetsk, Jan 16 — DAN. Four civilians have been wounded in a Ukrainian artillery attack on Ilyich Avenue in the Kalininsky district of Donetsk on Monday.
The building ruined by shelling accommodated a pharmacy, a food shop, a lawyer’s office and a gym, the Donetsk People’s Republic Healthcare Ministry told the Donetsk News Agency.
Ukrainian armed formations have fired more than 120 rounds of ammunition at the Donetsk People’s Republic since the beginning of Monday causing civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure.
As the world celebrated the end of 2022 and the arrival of 2023, the Donbass experienced New Year’s Eve with the sound of guns and multiple rocket launchers. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian army’s New Year’s bombardment caused many civilian casualties.
The Strategic Communications Directorate of Ukraine’s Armed Forces claimed on Sunday that some 400 mobilised Russian soldiers were killed in a vocational school building in Makiivka and about 300 more were wounded.
That claim could not be independently verified. The Russian statement said the strike occurred “in the area of Makiivka” and did not mention the vocational school.
According to the governor of Russia’s Samara region, Dmitry Azarov, an unspecified number of residents of the region were among those killed and wounded by the strike on Makiivka.
The Ukrainian authorities appealed to the US leadership with a request to provide cluster munitions for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This is reported by the American television channel CNN, citing information from informed sources. According to the media, the administration of US President Joe Biden considered this request for several months. In the end, Kyiv was denied so far, but not in a categorical manner.
For several days, the Ukrainian army has been shelling residential areas of Donbass towns with Grad and Himars multiple rocket launchers and NATO 155mm artillery, killing and injuring many civilians.

On November 12, using American HIMARs (according to DPR military experts), Ukraine fired two shells directly at a cultural building in the DPR’s northern city of Gorlovka, destroying parts of the roof and the theatre hall within.
Built in 1951, the Shakhtar Palace of Culture was formerly a movie theatre and in recent years, a venue for concerts and various cultural events. Alexey, a Gorlovka resident & friend of mine to said that he saw the Donetsk philharmonic play there, and as a youth went there to see movies. He said that children take dancing or singing classes there, though due to Ukraine’s intensified shelling, those classes have been paused.
According to the centre’s director, it was one of the best movie theatres in the Donetsk region, one of the oldest, most beautiful and most beloved buildings in the city.
He noted that HIMARs system is a very precise weapon, the attack was not accidental.
Colonel Douglas Macgregor:
“Your more complex systems like HIMARs, the high mobility rocket system that we provided, are operated exclusively by American and British contractors. Ukrainians aren’t operating them.”
Given that there was no military target there, it is yet another example of Ukraine’s (& Western) terrorism against the people of the Donbass.
In the more than eight years of bombing the civilians of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, Ukraine has committed untold numbers of war crimes. These include bombing residential areas, markets, hospitals, schools, parks—including with prohibited heavy weapons and banned cluster munitions—and, since late July, raining banned “Petal” mines down on populated civilian areas, including the very center of Donetsk, including as recently as September 7.
