U.S. president-elect Joe Biden said last week that it is “time to heal in America.” Similarly, it is time to get China-U.S. relations back on a constructive, strategic and rational path. One of the things he should do is recalibrate the current narrative of how China has advanced technologically.

How Successful Were Trump’s Tariffs?
**Job Creation: On average, Trump’s tariffs destroyed jobs. But there were some winners and losers notably steel. The cost of the “winners” was $800,000 to $900,000 per job created. More jobs were lost elsewhere.
**Negotiation Leverage: Nonexistent. Trump resorts to threats so often on the flimsiest of grounds creates mistrust.
**Improve Security: No. Antagonizing allies never improves security.
State Department Announces That Great Firewall For The US; Blocks Chinese Apps & Equipment
Forget banning TikTok, the Trump State Department just suggested it wants to basically ban China from the internet. Rather than promoting an open internet and the concept of openness, it appears that under this administration we’re slamming the gates shut and setting up the Great American Firewall for the internet. Under the guise of what it calls the Clean Network to Safeguard America, last night Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced a program that is full of vague statements, that could, in practice, fragment the internet.
This is incredibly disappointing on multiple levels. While other countries — especially China, but also Iran and Russia — have created their own fragmented internet, the US used to stand for an open internet across the globe. Indeed, for whatever complaints we had about the State Department during the Obama administration (and we had many complaints), its commitment to an open internet was very strong and meaningful. That’s clearly now gone. The “Clean Network to Safeguard America” consists of five programs that can be summed up as “fuck you China.”

US semiconductor maker Nvidia said it will acquire UK-based computer chip designer Arm Holdings from SoftBank Group in a transaction worth $40 billion, a deal that could put the Chinese semiconductor industry at the risk of US control, Chinese analysts said.
The US is carrying out an extraordinary and unprecedented war against Huawei. This attack violates the rules-based international order that the US has championed since World War II. Rather than a civilized and fair competition, the current strategy resembles the modus operandi of Mafia. While Huawei is deeply wounded by the latest American extra-territorial bullying of global chip manufacturers, the overall narrative of China’s rise to the top of the technology pyramid remains unaffected. In the short term, Huawei has a couple of survival options; and in the long term, America’s brutal war will only accelerate China’s goal towards self-sufficiency.
