False report of 40 NK casualties prompts Seoul to warn against Ukrainian disinformation

What’s important is that the initial report came from the head of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council’s Center for Countering Disinformation. Disinformation refers to doctored or false information deliberately propagated by a state actor to maliciously influence another country. In the initial stages of the war, the Ukrainian government posted a video of the “Ghost of Kyiv,” a legendary fighter pilot who allegedly shot down six Russian fighter jets in 30 hours. Yet the actual existence of such a pilot has never been confirmed.

Considering such developments, South Korean intelligence officials have adopted a skeptical stance when it comes to reports from Ukraine. It’s gotten to the point where Korean intelligence officials are telling reporters to hold off on relaying reports about North Korean troops from Ukrainian officials until they receive third-party confirmation, because Ukraine makes “fake news” at the state level. This means we have to carefully consider the source of the information and the intentions behind it.

The “Fighters for Free North Korea*” group claimed to have sent balloons containing USB thumb drives loaded with K-pop music and 200,000 leaflets criticizing Kim Jong Un, while another group of DPRK defectors dispatched balloons containing anti-Pyongyang leaflets, radios, and USB thumb drives featuring a speech by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

In 2020, South Korea’s Constitutional Court invalidated a law criminalizing the sending of anti-Pyongyang propaganda, citing it as an undue restriction on free speech**. Consequently, experts argue that there are currently no legal grounds for the government to intervene in activists’ balloon launches into the DPRK. The South Korean Unification Ministry stated that the issue is being deliberated in light of the 2023 court ruling.

DPRK: Press Statement of Vice Department Director of C.C., WPK Kim Yo Jong

Press Statement of Vice Department Director of C.C., WPK Kim Yo Jong

Pyongyang, January 7 (KCNA) — Kim Yo Jong, vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, on Sunday issued the following press statement titled “Misjudgment, conjecture, obstinacy and arrogance will invite irretrievable misfortune”:

The Joint Chiefs of Staff of the ROK on Jan. 6 announced that the Korean People’s Army (KPA) launched artillery firing in the southwestern waters for two consecutive days of Jan. 5 and 6.

However, the KPA did not fire even a single shell into the relevant waters.

The ROK military gangsters quickly took the bait we threw.

We conducted a deceptive operation in order to assess the real detecting ability of the ROK military gangsters engrossed in bravo and blind bravery while crying for “precision tracking and monitoring” and “striking origin” whenever an opportunity presents itself and give a burning shame to them who will certainly make far-fetched assertions.

The KPA watched the reaction of the ROK military gangsters while detonating blasting powder simulating the sound of 130 mm coastal artillery for 60 times.
