UK’s New Prime Minister Makes No Apologies for Favoring the Wealthy

Truss also went out of her way to channel Britain’s first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, who remains as iconic among the Tory Party base as Ronald Reagan is for Republicans in the U.S. Truss has studied Thatcher’s body language, has adopted her dress style — as Twitter users were quick to point out — and has reached for many of the same rhetorical tools. Yet, style notwithstanding, she has nowhere near the ideological consistency or heft of a Thatcher.

It will take all of Truss’s shape-shifting talents, and then some, to turn around the election ship for the Conservatives over the coming two years, which is the time span that Truss has before the next general election must be called. In the meantime, as the U.K. grapples with a deepening economic crisis, all of the new prime minister’s public statements suggest that the country is going to be dragged ever-further rightward into a deregulated, anti-union, Brexit-hued future.

The scissors of slump

Last week, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told the US Congress that “We now are entering a period of transition from one of historic recovery to one that can be marked by stable and steady growth. Making this shift is a central piece of the President’s plan to get inflation under control without sacrificing the economic gains we’ve made.”

It’s true that the US economy since the depths of the pandemic slump, (which remember in terms of national output, incomes and investment was the worst since the 1930s – even worse that the Great Recession of 2008-9) has made a recovery. But it could hardly be described as ‘historic’. And as for the claim that the US economy, the best performing of the major economies in the last year, is heading towards ‘stable and steady growth’, that is not supported by reality.

Speaker at DSA panel: “War creates the possibility for a push of socialists ideas” + “Democratic Socialism” in the Service of U.S. Imperialism

At a recent panel event hosted by the Democratic Socialists of America’s (DSA) chapter for the state of Maine, Vladyslav Starodubstev, a leader of the Ukrainian pseudo-left Sotsialnyi Rukh (Social Movement), put forward the chilling perspective that “the war creates the possibility for a push of socialist ideas in Ukraine.” The panelists and DSA moderators stated their agreement with the speaker and demanded the US government deploy more tanks, missiles, and howitzers to wage war against Russia, regardless of the risk of nuclear holocaust.

“Democratic Socialism” in the Service of U.S. Imperialism:

In “The Real Heritage of Harrington’s DSA,” we show where the reformist “democratic socialism” of 2018 came from, and what it actually stands for. Today’s Democratic Socialists of America hails the “tradition” of Michael Harrington and Norman Thomas, long-time leaders of the Socialist Party (SP) that gave rise to what is now the DSA. In that article (see p. x), we explain that this tradition has often, and accurately, been described as “State Department socialism.” Those unfamiliar with the left may think the term is a polemical excess or empty epithet. Not at all. In fact, intimate ties to the Department of State are only the beginning of the intertwining of the official social democrats with the agencies of U.S. imperialism. Activists who want to devote themselves to genuine socialism need to know what’s what. So here’s the story

Truths and lies about pledges made to Russia

by Guy Mettan,* Freelance journalist, Geneva

(17 February 2022) The information war surrounding tensions between NATO and Russia over Ukraine often leads to distortions of historical reality.

In particular, it is necessary to correct numerous articles that claimed that the pledge made by the United States to Gorbachev in 1991, according to which NATO “would not move an inch in the East” in exchange for German reunification and the withdrawal of Red Army troops from Eastern Europe, was a “myth” forged by the Kremlin in order to neutralise or even invade Ukraine.

This thesis is based on an article published in Foreign Affairs magazine in 2014, at the time of the Ukrainian crisis, and reaffirmed in a book published last November. Its author, Mary E. Sarote, is a member of the most influential think tank in US imperial politics, the Council on Foreign Relations, whose opinions are more propaganda than impartial study.

For this so-called “myth” could not be truer. It is essential to be aware of it if we want to both understand what is happening and find a negotiated solution to the conflict.

NATO Expansion: What Gorbachev Heard

NATO as religion

The US/NATO/Ukraine/Russia controversy is not entirely new. We already saw the potential of serious trouble in 2014 when the US and European states interfered in the internal affairs of Ukraine and covertly/overtly colluded in the coup d’état against the democratically elected President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, because he was not playing the game assigned to him by the West. Of course, our media hailed the putsch as a “colour revolution” with all the trappings of democracy.

How does the West conspire to contain China?

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) recently announced the establishment of a new China mission center, with the aim to continue suppressing China’s peaceful rise. In addition, Western forces have been keen on smearing China by repeating the same old narratives of “democracy” and “human rights,” and even fabricating the despicable lies about the so-called “genocide” in Xinjiang. When we look back at the major negative social events in Hong Kong in recent years, there have been traces of CIA’s interference.

Why are these Western countries so “interested” in China’s internal affairs? What conspiracies and traps have they laid in the way of China’s development? Do they do it via foreign spies in HK? Do spies work like James Bond?

In this episode of Legal Affairs, Lawrence Ma, Chairman of the Hong Kong Foundation for Legal Exchange, exposes the ulterior motives and evil plots of the West from a historical and legal perspective, unveiling the mystery of some “local proxies” in HK.

According to Ma, during the Cold War, Western countries tried to reform the Soviet Union from within, inducing Gorbachev to carry out a political revolution, which eventually led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Similarly, they have used their old tricks against China all along. In 1989, the West brought up the topic of “democracy” to fund and induce students to protest, misleading people into believing that “everything will be fine if we introduce so-called ‘democracy’ into China”. The purpose behind this, obviously enough, was to overthrow the Communist Party’s leadership, Ma said.

The West’s conspiracy didn’t work out at that time, and in the face of China’s rise, they turned to the so called “China containment policy.” Although the U.S. side has never admitted it, such a policy that has been in place to contain China in all aspects, including currency, energy, food, military, diplomacy, and media.

To this day, Western countries are sending their agents to HK as diplomats or consuls, who use diplomatic passports as shields to avoid any charges they face in the city. The more important task of these spies is to train local puppets, like students, such as Wong Chi-fung and others. Foreign powers push the puppets to the front line, instructing them to act as local proxies and stage “color revolutions” in the city. Watch the video now for more details!
