Biden vowed to protect free speech, but will he reverse Pompeo’s anti-BDS moves?
The Democratic platform, a non-binding document that set the party’s priorities for the next four years, also promised that Democrats would protect free speech.
“We oppose any effort to unfairly single out and delegitimize Israel, including at the United Nations or through the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement, while protecting the constitutional right of our citizens to free speech,” said the document, which was approved with Biden’s support in July.
What Biden owes the Palestinians
Fortunately, there are promising signs that Biden will take a very different approach from his predecessor. Resolution 2334 passed because U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration, then in its final days, decided not to veto it. The order came from Susan Rice, Obama’s national security adviser at the time, who is now said to be on Biden’s short list for secretary of state.
Of course, Biden himself was vice president in the Obama administration, and in 2014, he told Netanyahu, “I don’t agree with a damn thing you say.” Other projected Biden administration appointees — including incoming chief of staff Ron Klain — all oppose illegal Israeli settlement activity.
Peaceful movement will prevail, says BDS in response to Pompeo calling it anti-Semitic
The Palestinian Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement has criticized secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s statement that the US will label the movement as anti-Semitic. In a statement, the Palestinian BDS national committee (BNC) said that “the peaceful BDS movement would prevail over the far-right Trump-Netanyahu alliance.”
