In recent years, we have gotten calls on the GI Rights Hotline from service members concerned about having to police the US-Mexican border and/or police demostrations in the US. Others feel disturbed by US support for specific overseas operations, like Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank. Many call us with a troubled conscience, and some ask about applying for a conscientious objection (CO) discharge. Military regulations spell out very specific criteria for military members to qualify as a conscientious objector. Keep reading to see if a CO discharge may be appropriate for you. We are former U.S. Government Officials who resigned from our respective positions over the last nine months due to our grave concerns with current U.S. policy towards the crisis in Gaza, and U.S. policies and practices towards Palestine and Israel more broadly. We are subject matter experts representing the interagency, and are a multifaith and multiethnic community of professionals and patriots dedicated to the service of the United States of America, its people, and its values. Whether in the civil service, foreign service, armed forces, or as political appointees, each of us has sworn an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and as our nation celebrates its Independence Day, each of us are reminded that we resigned from government not to terminate that oath but to continue to abide by it; not to end our commitment to service, but to extend it.

The Uhuru Movement is a group of Black Socialists who were recently arrested in a SWAT raid and charged with operating as agents of the Russian government. Akbar explains what the Uhuru Movement is and gives some details on what the U.S. government is attempting to use as evidence in its effort to send these political activists to prison.
