Living in an Age of War: Russia, Ukraine and the Way Out

The events that have unfolded in Ukraine have been very unsettling. As Ukrainians flee their country and the west imposing the harshest of the sanctions in Russia, it is imperative that we delve deeper into what led to this chaos in the first place. People have been quick enough to pick sides without actually knowing what exactly is happening. Zyuganov Gennady Andreevich, the Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation had this to say about the conflict:

Western media goes white nationalist, calls Ukraine more ‘civilized’ than Iraq, whitewashes US wars

Media outlets are calling Ukraine “civilized,” emphasizing that its people are white European Christians, while ignoring or whitewashing the US military occupations of Syria and Iraq, Western-backed Saudi bombing of Yemen, and constant Israeli attacks on Syrians and Palestinians.

Experts have warned that the measure could ultimately actually serve to boost the development of a system parallel to the SWIFT service that is not beholden to the US and EU.

“Both Russia and China have generated alternative mechanisms of economic resistance, such as interbank payment systems outside SWIFT. Insofar as imperialism intensifies its violence, it only ends up pushing the very hegemony of the dollar in the world and the monopolies that NATO represents off a cliff,” Rivas went on to tell Venezuelanalysis.

Putin’s Nuclear Threat

The disconnect between the Western and Russian narratives in the current conflict could prove fatal to the world, writes Scott Ritter.

Vladimir Putin is a madman. He’s lost it. At least that is what the leaders of the West would like you to believe. According to their narrative, Putin — isolated, alone, confused, and angry at the unfolding military disaster Russia was undergoing in Ukraine — lashed out, ostensibly threatening the entire world with nuclear annihilation.

In this sense, Russia had reason to feel threatened and could invoke pertinent provisions of the Helsinki Final Act of 1975. As an American, who feels vicariously responsible for decisions of my government, my heart goes out to the people of Ukraine and of the Donbass. It is a disgrace that the Ukrainians have been abused and misused by NATO, sacrificed on the altar of imperial geopolitics.
