Niger’s deposed president wrote an article in the Washington Post. It read as if it was prepared to fit the agenda of the US military interventionists. Mohamed Bazoum is either ignorant of history or he is not the one puling the strings. Here is my latest.

The Intercept has verified that Brig. Gen. Moussa Salaou Barmou, the head of Niger’s Special Operations Forces and a key figure in the unfolding coup in Niger, received training from the U.S. military. Since 2008, military officers trained by the United States have been involved in 11 coups in West Africa.

U.S. Special Operations forces are not required to vet for past human rights violations by the foreign troops they arm and train as surrogates, newly disclosed documents show.

Apart from meeting with senior Ethiopian government officials, Blinken is scheduled to meet with humanitarian [front] organizations that partner with the United States and civil society leaders. Food security, humanitarian assistance and human rights are among the agenda items he will be discussing with the aforementioned groups.

Monday’s speech came at a time when France’s influence on the continent is facing its biggest challenges in decades. Growing anti-French sentiment has led to street protests in several West and North African countries.

In addition, historical economic ties that France had with the region are under pressure from the growing commercial presence of Russia, China and Turkey.

Macron acknowledged that Africa now is a “field of competition” and urged French businesses to “wake up” and get involved in the fight.

In the past year, French troops had to withdraw from Mali, which turned instead to private Russian military contractors of the Wagner group, and most recently from Burkina Faso, which also appears to increasingly look towards Moscow.
