The Fuman Oilfield in Xinjiang’s Taklamakan Desert, holding over a billion tons of reserves deep beneath the surface, has commenced operations. This activation signifies China’s move to tap into its deepest oil and gas resources.

Located in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Tarim Basin is a significant petroliferous basin in China. The ultra-deep oil and gas resources in the basin account for more than 60 percent of the total onshore ultra-deep oil and gas resources in China, and 19 percent of the global total.

China Heralds Another Major Oil Discovery

China’s state-run China Petrochemical Group, Sinopec, says it has discovered a massive oilfield in the Tarim Basin, containing 1.7 billion tons of oil reserves.

The discovery is the result of exploration in the Shunbei oil and gas field, said to be one of the deepest commercial fields in the world, in the country’s Xinjiang region.
