Extending Russia: The MEGOBARI Act Aims for Regime Change in Georgia

We have seen this play out before, the United States government relentlessly acting to control the government in a former Soviet Union republic bordering Russia and then proceeding to support that government in war against Russia. That course of action has led to devastation in Ukraine, including the deaths of hundreds of thousands of individuals, in a US proxy war against Russia. Through Monday approval in the United States House of Representatives of the Mobilizing and Enhancing Georgia’s Options for Building Accountability, Resilience, and Independence Act (MEGOBARI Act) by a vote of 349 to 42, the House took a big step toward a replay of this disaster in Georgia.

In February 2024, Traoré ordered the suspension of the issuance of export permits for small-scale private gold production, a move aimed at tackling illegal trade. According to the World Gold Council’s 2023 figures, Burkina Faso is the 13th-largest gold producer in the world, producing about 100 tonnes, equivalent to about US$6 billion in value, each year.

“Dark Indonesia” and Astroturfed Subversion + More

21-04-2025: Since February, Indonesia has been beset by protests largely led by students, so-called civil society organisations, some labour unions and K-pop fans. Protests emerged in many cities throughout the Indonesian archipelago including Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Solo, Semarang, Bali, Samarinda, Banjarmasin and South Sumatra. The protestors were reportedly delivering a “red report card” on the first 100 days of President Prabowo Subianto’s administration. They also condemned Prabowo’s “Ndasmu!” remark towards critics of the Free Nutritious Meal program.[1] “Ndasmu” is an impolite Javanese word meaning “your head”, which perhaps implies that the protestors’ actions were the result of something that existed in their heads only. The slogan “Dark Indonesia” under which the protests took place, is a stab at Prabowo’s election slogan of “Golden Indonesia” (Indonesia Emas), which aims to advance the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) to a sovereign, prosperous nation by 2045, the centennial of its independence won in 1945.[2]

Hegseth visits Manila: Washington prepares for war with China

The language of Hegseth’s press conference in Manila is indicative of the openly aggressive face of US imperialism under Trump. Gone was any reference to what had been the political shibboleth of Washington in the Asia Pacific region: the defense of “freedom of navigation.” Hegseth spoke rather of “preparing for war,” using the phrase more than once. Every time Hegseth mentioned China he termed it “Communist China,” and spoke of its “aggression.” Hegseth referred to US Seventh fleet commander Admiral Samuel Paparo “and his war plans. Real war plans.”

The perils of job hunting

I’ve been searching for remote work opportunities, and one organization immediately caught my eye. It’s been funded by the European Union, the Ford Foundation, the German International Cooperation Society, Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, the Tides Foundation, UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, and the Global Women’s Institute at the George Washington University, among others. The idea of working for a front organization—while exposing them—would be ironic (not to mention hypocritical).

Trump aides circulate plan for complete revamp of foreign aid programs

— Placing the Millennium Challenge Corporation and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency under the auspices of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation. The combined entity would focus on promoting private sector investment, especially in areas such as infrastructure, energy and technology. The document says the new approach would be a powerful counterweight to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which Beijing has used to gain economic and diplomatic footholds in many countries.

U.S.A.I.D. Official Orders Employees to Shred or Burn Classified and Personnel Records

In a volatile cabinet meeting at the White House last Thursday, Mr. Rubio vented his anger at Mr. Musk for the eradication of the aid agency.

On Monday, Mr. Rubio announced on social media that officials had canceled 5,200 aid agency contracts, or 83 percent of the total. The remaining 1,000 will be managed by the State Department, he said. And he thanked Mr. Musk’s team.

The State Department has not released details of the remaining 1,000 contracts.

Several hundred employees of U.S.A.I.D. will probably be absorbed into the State Department, aid agency officials say.
