I read an article today about a woman reflecting on her father’s PTSD. Her family had the same rule as mine—if you needed to wake Dad, you did so from the doorway to prevent the risk of an accidental reaction triggered by a flashback. I wonder how many children of military veterans have lived with this unspoken understanding, shaped by their parents’ trauma.

This picture of the USS Beloit is my iPhone wallpaper. Unfortunately, I missed the livestream of the ship commissioning. I ended up watching most of the replay on YouTube but fast forwarded through all but the last 19 minutes.

I was going through my father’s photos (see after the cut), last night, from when he was in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. I had assumed that he was an E-5, but he may have only been an E-3. We kids were told not to mention his service because of his PTSD, so I never asked him. I thought that I had his service records (I know where to request them, if I have to) because I found out which ship he was on many years ago. Unfortunately, it slips my mind now. I have a T-shirt in storage, with their patch on it. I’ll have to look for it, soon.
